Colares, the westernmost Demarcated Region of Continental Europe, is located in the municipality of Sintra, presenting peculiar characteristics due to its proximity to the sea and the strong sea winds to which it is subject.
Geologically, Colares, is divided into two sub-zones: sandy soils, with vines planted in free standing, of the varieties Ramisco (red) and Malvasia de Colares (white), suitable for Wines DOC Colares; and clay-limestone soils, suitable for IGP Lisbon Wines and Wines of Portugal (IVV).
This small wine-growing area, with a temperate and humid climate, produces elegant wines. Its high acidity, salinity and freshness, provide great potential for aging in bottle, making the Region of Colares a kind of "sanctuary" for connoisseurs of this wine.
The geographical area corresponding to the “Colares” Denomination of Origin is located in the municipality of Sintra, between the Mountain and the Ocean, in an area by the sea, comprising the parishes of Colares, São Martinho and São João das Lampas.
