Wineries and Producers

Bucelas Demarcated Region

The wine route of Bucelas, Carcavelos e Colares is already a classic in the county of Loures. Established in 2003 to publicize the winemaking tradition of a region that has a set of favourable factors to boosting wine tourism, this route is still a good excuse to taste the famous wine from the Demarcated Region of de Bucelas and to visit the producers associated with the project: the Municipality of Loures and eight producers (bottlers) of Bucelas’ wine: Enoport United Wines; Wine Ventures – Quinta da Romeira; Chão do Prado; Couteaux da Murta; Boas Quintas; Quinta Nova de Bucelas; Monte do Roseiral e Quinta das Carrafouchas.

By participating in this route, you can: visit the wine production farms existing in Bucelas parish; know a little more about the vineyards; visit some cellars and wineries; participate in wine tasting and even take with you, as a souvenir, the so called “nectar of the gods”.

On the way, the heritage and gastronomy are also highlighted, which allow participants to better understand the place, its people, developing and generating, this way, wealth in the regions.

Coteaux da Murta

Coteaux da Murta

Quinta da Murta, located in the hills of the demarcated region of Bucelas, are surrounded by one of the main Roman roads that crossed Portugal and very close to the last Anglo-Portuguese fortification, which served as the hinge against Napoleon's troops.
It is located about 25 km north of Lisbon, in the Lusitanian basin, whose soil dates from the Jurassic period.

The vineyard is planted on the upper slopes, 250 meters above sea level. Facing south and southwest, it is protected from the Atlantic winds by a range of hills, enjoying a very specific microclimate. Wet and relatively cold in the winter and in the evenings, contrasting with hot, dry days during the summer. All this contributes to a slow maturation, but perfect that retains the freshness of the Atlantic Ocean.

Besides the vineyard and its landscape, the existence of a modern winery, with tasting room and a shop where you can find old crops, the Quinta da Murta also features a ballroom, a rustic house with pool and an outdoor deck that can accommodate for all types of events up to 300 guests.

Main wines:

  • Quinta da MURTA “The wine of Shakespeare” brancos DOC Bucelas;
  • MURTA tinto Touriga Nacional&Syrah IG Lisboa;
  • MURTA Espumante Rose Extra Bruto IG Lisboa;
  • Quinta da MURTA “ The wine of Shakespeare” Clássico DOC Bucelas;

Enoport United Wines - Caves Velhas

Enoport United Wines - Caves Velhas

João Camillo Alves founded Adegas Camillo Alves in 1881, a pioneering company in the commercialisation of quality wine brands in Portugal.

In 1939, the Caves Velhas brand was founded by João Júlio Camilo Alves, the founder's grandson, a great businessman and above all a strategist, who dared to expand his family's business by implementing branded wines.

In the historic Caves Velhas building, located in the centre of Bucelas, the capital of Arinto, we can appreciate that same history. This building is being restored to allow visits, tastings and other wine events, where you can enjoy wines with stories and memories.

At Quinta do Boição, which was acquired by Caves Velhas in 1989, we can find vines that are over 70 years old and are mainly planted with the Arinto grape variety.

The Arinto variety, native to the Bucelas region where it has the greatest genetic variability, finds its terroir of choice here, producing wines with a lot of minerality and high natural acidity, making the wine last over time without losing the strengths so characteristic of this region.

Sustainable and environmentally friendly agriculture (integrated production) is practised alongside a biodiversity characterised by a wealth of fauna and flora.

Cultural practices such as pruning, hilling and harvesting are entirely manual.

Activities:

- Guided tour to the winery and vineyards

- Guided tour to the historic Caves Velhas building

- Wine tasting

- Wine and gastronomy themed events

Quinta da Romeira

Quinta da Romeira

Located in Bucelas, at the heart of one of the oldest wine exporting regions (mentioned by Shakespeare in Henry VI), Quinta da Romeira began an in-depth project to restore the manor house in 1988.

At the same time, it ensured the planting of what is the most extensive area of continuous Arinto vines in Portugal. It currently has 70 hectares and a winery entirely designed to produce white wines of the highest quality.

Its history tells us that in 1703, the third Count of Castelo Melhor, Luis de Vasconcelos e Sousa - a key figure in the marriage contract negotiations between Princess Catarina de Bragança and the King of England, Charles II - established the Morgadio de Santa Catherina, in honour of the princess, which included Quinta da Romeira, located in Bucelas. At the end of the following century, Sir Arthur Wellesley, later Duke of Wellington, even came to stay at Solar da Quinta, a house with a sober and aristocratic layout, with a view from its Manueline windows of the famous ‘lines of towers’, which he had built at the gates of Lisbon.

Main wines:

Morgado de Stª Catherina;
Prova Régia
Sparkling Brut.

After the implementation of new varieties of vine and vineyard remodeling, it is currently the private vineyard nearest to Lisbon inner city.
