Wineries and Producers

Colares Demarcated Region

The Demarcated Region of Colares, created in 1908, small in area when compared to other wine-making regions in the country, achieved relevance at the turn of 20th century due to the high percentage of ramisco vines that were cultivated and occupied a large part of the surface area.

The Adega Regional de Colares (Colares Regional Cellar) was established in 1931, with the objective of ensuring the quality and origin of the region’s wine products.

Initially founded by 81 members, in the following years it registered a considerable increase in the number of associates and is the oldest cooperative winery in the country.

In 1934, by decree-law n. º 24 500, of September 19th – considered by many as the true Charter  of Colares wine  – the Adega Regional de Colares was granted the exclusive  right to manufacture Colares wine, at the same time as an aging period of a minimum of two years was set so as to guarantee the quality of this wine product.

In the following decades, the high cost of labour, the difficult planting in the sandy soil, the crisis in wine production, the increase of pine forests in detriment of vineyards and the advance of urban areas have, among others factors, contributed towards the decrease in the production of ramisco.

Today, besides the Adega Regional de Colares, there are other wineries and individual producers of the Colares wine.

Quinta Vale da Roca

Quinta Vale da Roca

Quinta Vale da Roca is located in Azóia, in Colares, more precisely on the southern slope of Cabo da Roca. Originally with about 3000m2 and serving mainly as a holiday home in the 20s, it was converted into an agritourism dedicated to vineyards and wine, between the Sintra Mountains and the Atlantic Ocean, which gives it a landscape setting with magnificent views.

With two brands in its portfolio, Quinta Vale da Roca's wines are mostly made from native portuguese grape varieties, and in the main brand with the name "Quinta Vale da Roca" there are 3 wines – two white and one red – made exclusively with grapes from the approximately 3ha of vineyards planted inside the property, where Malvasia de Colares, Encruzado and Pinot Noir, represent the 3 monovarietals.

As a complement to these, the "Vinha da Roca" brand presents a white blend (Malvasia, Arinto and Fernão Pires) and a red blend (Touriga Nacional, Tinta Roriz and Castelão) produced from grapes purchased from local producers.

Ramilo Wines

Ramilo Wines

2013. This was the year brothers Pedro and Nuno Ramilo were challenged by their father to embrace a family tradition of 4 generations.

They said yes, but with one condition: they would do it their own way. From that moment on, they would not be just another wine producer, making good wines, that don’t stand out. They believed their future laid in their ancestors’ roots, hidden in the Lizandro River slopes and in the sandy properties of Colares, among the terraces and ancient stone walls of the old family vineyards. They rebuilt the family estates, saved old vines and planted new ones. The brothers are now on the verge of becoming the largest private producer of the famous Ramisco from Colares.

Visconde Salreu Wine Cellar

Visconde Salreu Wine Cellar

Spurred by the success of Colares wine, in 1921 the Viscount of Salreu built a vast cellar in Banzão, designed by Norte Junior, the architect.

The building, which drew inspiration from vernacular architecture, consists of two parallel blocks which form a set of structures of remarkable shape and form.

The imposing façade can be seen from the road that links Colares to Praia da Maçãs. It is currently owned by the Chitas family.

Viúva Gomes

Viúva Gomes

Viúva Gomes aims to value the small terroirs inside the Region of Colares. We believe in genuine wines, deeply connected to the surrounding land, preserving and valuing the aptitude of each place.

We intend to distinguish the characteristics and singularities of the appellation (DO) Colares*, but also to demonstrate the potential of the remaining places inside the Region, without the aptitude for the DO. All of this supported on its intrinsic features, valued by difference and not by hierarchy.

On the three parishes to produce DOC Colares’ wine – Colares, São Martinho and São João das Lampas – it’s verified not just a climatic variability, but also a geological and orographic change, worth studying and highlighting. These variations make each wine unique and strongly connected to each terroir.

We believe future is made with the past. Therefore, it is vital to respect the long path that brough us here. Nevertheless, we keep an open door to knowledge and new discoveries. These help us to outline the evolution seized for Viúva Gomes and the future of Colares.

José and Diogo Baeta, 4th and 5th generation of Viúva Gomes’ guardians.

*The grapes for the appellation (DO) Colares grow on sandy soils, from own rooted vines, mainly Malvasia de Colares (Whites) and Ramisco (Reds).
